Water Safety

At Camp Anothen, water safety is one of our top priorities because we want our campers to have fun and stay safe. We’re proud to offer four kinds of water fun: kayaking and corcls, the pond zip, our swimming pond, and our swimming pool. We also have inflatable water slides, which are supervised by our camp counselors. Below, I’m answering some of the most common questions we hear from parents about how we keep water activities safe.

Are lifeguards on duty? Are they properly trained and certified?

Yes, lifeguards are always on duty at every water activity. All of our lifeguards are certified by the American Red Cross and are “deep water” certified. In addition, each lifeguard completes training through Ministry Safe, and undergoes a full background check when hired.

What is the adult-to-child ratio for water activities? How many staff members supervise swimmers?

For all water activities, we maintain a 1:25 adult-to-camper ratio. Along with certified lifeguards, two counselors are always in the water with campers, providing added supervision and care.

Do you provide life jackets? How do you decide if a camper needs one?

Yes — we provide life jackets for all campers. For pond-based activities, life jackets are required for everyone, regardless of age. At the swimming pool, campers must take a swim test administered by our certified lifeguards; those who pass may swim without a life jacket. This helps us make sure that swimming ability matches the activity.

What safety rules do you have for the pool or any water area?

We do have strict safety rules for all water activities — and we enforce them consistently. Our rules include: no diving, no flipping, no running, and no roughhousing. These guidelines help prevent accidents and ensure every child stays safe while enjoying the water.

We believe that with trained staff, proper supervision, clear rules, along with life jackets and swim tests we can provide a water program that is both fun and safe. Our motto at Camp Anothen is Fun. Safe. Gospel. We love having fun, staying safe, and sharing the Gospel together.
